Advanced Chemical Etching – Metal Matters October 2023
Published on 24/11/2023
Enjoy what we’ve been getting up to in September and October in our latest edition of Metal Matters…
A positive debut at Hydrogen Technology Expo
Our first ever appearance at the Hydrogen Technology Expo was a resounding success, with more than 30 opportunities taken over the two days in Bremen, Germany.
Interest came from clients involved in fuel cell development and hydrogen power, with many of them actively working in the automotive, aerospace and marine sectors.
ACE’s ability to produce components for use in carbon capture, bipolar plates and heat exchangers was the topic of most of the conversations and there was plenty of interest from companies across Europe and the US.
“Orders and NDAs have already been received and the first of those parts are being produced out of our Telford factory,” commented Ian Whateley, Managing Director of ACE.
“Next year’s show in Hamburg is already pencilled in our event calendar!”
ACE road trip
One of our big pushes over the last twelve months has been on educating companies to the etching process and all of the different applications it can be used for.
This gathered real momentum recently when we took part in a two-week Defence and Aerospace Technology Roadshow.
Organised by Dream Marketing, in partnership with the Midlands Aerospace Alliance (MAA) and Make UK, the tour visited seven large aerospace companies across the UK, including ACE, Rolls-Royce, Moog, Marshall Aerospace, GKN, Thales, Leonardo and Harwell.
This turned out to be very successful as ACE experts had the unique opportunity to speak to more than 100 designers and engineers about the capabilities of photo etching by showing them samples and explaining different production benefits.
More than 50 contacts have been forged as a direct result of our involvement in the two-week roadshow.
Can’t make it to any events? Request an ACE Roadshow visit, where we bring the event to you. This established service is back on the roads again, giving you the chance to engage with our Technical Sales Engineers from the comfort of your own building. Our team can set-up within your facility and will explain how our services can assist in your company.
Welcoming our Process Control Manager
As well as recruiting several new production operatives, we have also created an important new role that will boost our manufacturing performance.
Steve Bowers, who has been appointed as our Process Control Manager, will be working closely with our Production Director to ensure all processes are optimised, covering operational machine settings, chemical settings and new process introduction.
He will also be responsible for following through technically challenging new products and being involved in writing special process instructions for others to follow.
Chris Ball, Executive Director at ACE, said: “We’re delighted to see Steve progress within the company as we continue to bolster our production team by making sure we have the capacity and the right processes in place.
“In addition, we’ve also recruited Callum, an Msci Chemist, as a new Lab Technician. Working with our Technical Manager, his role will be to control the chemistry and ensure all process control procedures/tests are carried out on the various manufacturing processes.
“Both of these positions will improve our process control, quality and technical ability.”

Boom time in September!
2023 has been a hugely successful time for the business and we are delighted to announce that September was the best month in our history for new customers, quotation and enquiry levels for products and generation of new contacts.
These came from various industries with a specific uptick in new energy fields, such as hydrogen fuel cells.
The products they are ordering are in metals including Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Nickel Super Alloys, and Titanium, with some components produced in 0.075mm thick plates.
A big thank you to all members of staff for their continued hard work and ensuring production is keeping up with the tremendous efforts of our sales team.
